One of the biggest marketing challenges I hear from small business owners is that they don’t realize how much they need to market their business.
The real challenge is finding the time actually to do it.
You start the week with plans. You’re going to post on social media, follow up with leads, update your website, ask for reviews, and maybe even send an email.
Then Monday gets hectic.
Customer calls. There is some project that needs your attention. We need to issue a quote. Something unusual occurs.
And then it’s Friday. And marketing never left the to-do list.
Sounds familiar?
The answer is probably not another complicated marketing plan.
You need a marketing routine you can actually stick to.
Stop Marketing Every Day.
A common mistake I see small business owners make is to think they always have to be doing something marketing-related.
You don’t need to.
To be consistent, you don’t have to be everywhere every day. It means creating a simple rhythm that keeps your business visible and encourages potential customers to come your way.
Rather than asking:
“What do I post today?”
Try asking:
“What are the few marketing activities my business needs each week?”
That little tweak makes marketing feel so much more manageable.
Give the 3-2-1 Marketing Routine a Try
Here’s a simple routine I like for busy small business owners.
3 – Contact 3 people
Follow up with a prospect. Touch base with an old customer. Ask a pleased customer for a review. Contact someone you met at a networking event.
Marketing is not just new people. Occasionally your best opportunities are right within your network.
2 – Develop or schedule 2 pieces of content
They don’t have to be fancy.
Tell a customer success story. Show a before-and- after. Answer a frequently asked question. Post a useful tip. Tell us what you’re working on.
And schedule and batch your content in advance when you can.
1 – Examine one thing
Spend some time looking at what’s happening.
Did anybody come to your website? Which post got the most engagement? Where does your most recent question come from? Are people clicking on your links? Do you have a lead to follow up on?
You don’t need a fancy analytics dashboard.
You only need enough info to decide:
What is working, and what should I do next?
Give Marketing an Appointment
Here’s the part that can really make a difference.
Marketing schedule.
Maybe it’s 30 minutes every Monday morning.
How about Friday afternoon?
Maybe you spend an hour twice a month creating and scheduling out content.
What matters is that you have a routine, not what that routine is.
Treat that time like a customer appointment—because at the end of the day, marketing is how you’ll meet your future customers.
Make the Routine Simpler with AI and Automation
And it’s also where standard artificial intelligence can be very useful.
You can use AI to brainstorm content ideas, expand a single idea into multiple posts, draft follow-up emails, create FAQs, or repurpose something you’ve already written.
Then, automation can handle repetitive tasks, like scheduling your posts or sending appointment reminders.
But there’s an important difference:
Use technology to back up your routine, not to replace the relationships behind your business.
One of my favorite reminders is that:
Automate the task, not the relationship.
Your Routine Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
Some weeks you won’t get it all done.
That’s all right.
It is not the goal to build the perfect marketing machine.
It’s about building a routine that’s simple enough that you can return to it, even when business is hectic.
Begin your 3-2-1 routine:
3 connections.
2 items of content.
1 marketing check-in.
Add anything else you want after that.
Sustainable marketing is not about doing more.
It’s about creating some good habits and sticking to them.
Your Turn to Talk
Find a recurring time in your calendar this week for marketing.
Ask yourself then:
What’s the minimum marketing routine I could realistically sustain for the next 90 days?
Begin there.
